Death is his older sister, a gorgeous goth girl, with the most refreshing outlook on life that I have ever come across, Despair and Desire are twins (quite logical, when you think about it) Desire being a drop-dead gorgeous androgynous being and her twin, Despair, a troll-like woman with a hooked nail. He is a beautiful, tortured man, full of angst. The books are set around Dream, the Sandman, Lord Morpheus of the Dreaming. This is not without some disturbing consequences as people fall prey to a 'sleeping sickness' and Dream's kingdom falls into utter disarray. Instead they get her brother Dream, who is then held prisoner for decades. Consisting of 9 books, that should be read in sequence, Gaiman has created 'The Endless', 7 immortal brothers and sisters, that interact with our world in their specific roles, they are: Dream (Morpheus), Death, Despair, Desire, Destiny, Delirium and Destruction. The plot concerns a cult attempting to capture and control Death. Gaiman set a standard that has yet to be matched. I firmly believe they are responsible for the graphic novel as a genre, becoming so popular. The Sandman books are definitely the thinking person's graphic novel. Having discovered Sandman in 1987 (yes, my copies DO have the original dust jackets, now not available anymore), they completely rocked my world and my perceptions. Illustrated by an exemplary selection of the mediums most gifted artists, the series is a rich blend of modern and ancient mythology in which contemporary fiction, historical drama, and legend are seamlessly interwoven.The Sandman Vol.
